Description of Event:

Identify key reasons why tobacco use must be addressed in clients suffering with mental illness and/or substance abuse. Speakers will review barriers to treat and offer options to break down barriers, evaluate various assessment tools for tobacco intake, list the disease states that are causally related to tobacco intake and match treatment options to clients for optimal outcomes in tobacco cessation.

Description of Event:

ArMOM is an annual two-day free dental clinic sponsored by the Arkansas State Dental Association for underserved Arkansans. All services are provided free of charge by members of the Arkansas State Dental Association, assisted by a host of volunteers. ArMOM provides dental care for the relief of pain to underserved Arkansans, many of whom are from working families who do not have access or cannot afford dental insurance.

Description of Event:

You are invited to join the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Arkansas in a Flash Mob  to commemorate May 31st as World No Tobacco Day, and to visually demonstrate support for smoke-free environments and tobacco-free living.  Please meet at 10:55 a.m. on the sidewalk outside of Sticky Fingers Restaurant, corners of Commerce Street and Clinton Avenue, for the short activity. All participants are asked to wear a white top, if at all possible, and bring a sign with WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY and one tobacco fact written on it.

Below is a limited list of facts for you to use, if needed, or you can select another:

  • More than 400,000 smokers in the U.S. die from smoking each year
  • 50,000 non-smokers in the U.S. die from secondhand smoke exposure
  • 4,900 smokers in Arkansas die each year
  • 490 – 510 nonsmokers in Arkansas die from second hand smoke exposure
  • 177,000 kids in Arkansas are exposed to secondhand smoke in their home, daily
  • $817 million dollars is spent, each year,  treating smoking and/or tobacco related diseases and illness in Arkansas ($242 million is from Medicaid)
  • Arkansas residents State & Federal tax burden from smoking-caused government expenditures is about $558 per household
  • Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined – and thousands more die from other tobacco-related causes – such as fires caused by smoking.
  • Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.
  • Secondhand smoke exposure is the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., etc
  • There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Smoking is the leading cause of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease.
